Pray God-Sized Prayers

Writer: Jordan BeatonJordan Beaton

When a kid falls down and scrapes their knee, they cry for mom and dad. Whenever the middle-schooler doesn't make the volleyball team, they seek comfort from mom and dad. Whenever an adult looses a job, or finds out their child has cancer, most will call their mom and dad. For those who are blessed to have a healthy relationship with their parents, no matter the age, there is a certain level of comfort and refuge that they find in their mom and dad. There are many times in my life where I have needed advice or direction, or even just comfort, and the first person on my list to call is my dad.

I used to put these high expectations on my dad that whatever problem I was facing, he was the one who could fix it and make it better. Until one day God spoke to me, and He convicted me that my dad was the first person on my Emergency Contact list, but my Heavenly Father was the last on my list to call, if even at all. The Lord, the Creator of the universe, the One who is in control of everything, who puts the breath in my lungs, who has saved me from my sins and has my eternity secured, has no limits to what He can do, yet, I doubted that He could help my situation.

"If you then, being evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father who is in heaven give good things to those who ask Him!"

Matthew 7:11

PRAYER TIP # 20 – Pray God-Sized Prayers

I am not a parent yet, but I have two God fearing parents who love me very much. I know the sacrifices they have made for my family, and the care and love they have for me. But, my parents are still sinners. I hope to be a godly mom one day, but I am still a sinner and will fail often. The best mom or dad figure in your life, is still a sinner. Matthew reminds us that God is our Father. And unlike any earthly parent, He is our PERFECT Father. He will never fail us. He will never let us down, or keep anything good from us. God wants to do exceedingly abundantly more than what we could ever even imagine in our lives! (Ephesians 3:20) He wants to bless you and your family and children. But we have to pray big prayers, God-sized prayers! We need to ask Him to do what only He can do! Praise God if you have great parents, but they aren't the ones who can offer you hope and peace. They can't take away the cancer, or bless you with the perfect job. Only God can! God-sized prayers mean we need to recognize the power and authority that God has. It starts with declaring that our God can do whatever He pleases, and that He has a

God-sized plan for your life.

So next time you find yourself in a bind, before you pick up the phone to call a parent, spouse, or friend, go to God. Seek the One who can give you more than you can ask or think. How you pray will determine what kind of life you live. If you only pray small, ordinary, get-by prayers, most likely you’ll live a small, ordinary, get-by life. But when you have a boldness to ask God for big things, you ask Him to open doors that would normally not open, you ask Him to take you further than anyone in your family, when you pray God-sized prayers, you will see the greatness of God’s power.

Prayer Points -

  • Thank God that He is our perfect Father.

  • Praise Him that He has a God-sized plan for your life.

  • Ask Him to help you to have the faith to pray God-sized prayers.

  • Pray and declare that God has all authority and power, and can do the impossible in your life.

  • Name one area in your life that you need God to show up in a God-sized way! And pray to Him about it, more than you talk to others about it.

SUGGESTED PRAYER -

Dear God,

Thank You for being perfect Father. I stand in awe and gratitude at the holiness of Your Name. Thank You for never failing me. I thank You that You have saved me from my own sin and that You have a plan for my life. Thank You for wanting to use a broken soul like me. Lord, grow my faith. Help me to pray God-sized prayers.

I know that You access all authority and power, and can do the impossible in my life. So God I am asking You to do what only You can do and to (Name one area in your life that you need God to show up in a God-sized way). I commit myself to You. When I am tempted to talk to others about my needs first, remind me of who You are. You are my God, the Name above all names, the Creator and sustainer of my life. Move in a God-sized way in my life.

In Jesus’ Name, Amen.
